100 Perceptions: Raw Materials
Every single one of us relies on raw materials. Through a live recorded experiment, we explored public perceptions of where we should source the minerals and metals that we need for the energy transition.

The Study
We invited 100 volunteers from a cross-section of society to the Natural History Museum, London to analyse and understand the general public’s knowledge of raw materials and their opinions of where they should come from – opening our ears and listening to the full diversity of perceptions presented and how these may have changed throughout the experiment.
Making scientific information accessible stimulates critical thinking so that people can form their own opinions. Once that is achieved, we can have open conversations about how we want to design our society, how we want to achieve our decarbonisation goals, and what is the role of raw materials.
Our 100 participants faced a big dilemma that applies to the entire world.
We asked the 100 volunteers to respond to a series of statements at the beginning and end of the evening, having participated in a series of educational activities in-between. The purpose of asking the same statements at the beginning and at the end of the study is so that we could measure were people’s perceptions becoming more informed. Some statements focused on knowledge and awareness, to see if this changed over the course of the evening as we presented lots of information. Other statements assessed if this helped the participants to form an opinion – which could become more positive or more negative.

Filming the Documentary
The VECTOR Documentary was filmed and produced by Big Circus Media and Critical Productions.
We had an incredible experience filming the documentary overnight at the Natural History Museum London, and hope you enjoy watching the final film as much as we enjoyed making it.

Integrating VECTOR Research
100 Perceptions: Raw Materials integrates expertise and research outputs generated throughout the course of the VECTOR Project.
Our presenters, Professor Sarah Gordon, Professor Geertje Schuitema and Professor Richard Herrington are all project members. To learn more about their role’s within the project visit ‘Get to Know Us’.
The ‘Minerals Challenge’ as seen in the documentary is inspired by Dr Lucy Blennerhassett and Dr Fergus McAuliffe’s science communication research. ‘Green Dealz’ is a public engagement activity designed as part of their work and public engagement toolkit. The activity acts as a shopping task, where audiences can go “shopping” for the critical raw materials needed in green technologies and learn about the demand for critical raw materials to achieve the EU Green Deal in the process.
A digital version of the activity is currently in development and will be made available shortly.
